What to Bring to a U-Pull Yard: The Real Tool List
The bag I'd hand a beginner
- 3/8" drive ratchet with metric sockets 8–19mm (most cars), plus a 1/4" drive set for interior trim and small bolts
- Extensions (3" and 6") and a universal joint, since half the bolts are behind something
- Combination wrenches 8–19mm
- Breaker bar or long ratchet for rusted or tight bolts
- Screwdrivers (Phillips and flat) and a plastic trim tool to pop panels without breaking clips
- Torx and hex bits. European and many newer cars use them everywhere
- Pliers, side cutters and vise-grips
- Penetrating oil for rusty bolts. Spray it, then go pull something else while it soaks
- Pry bar
Gear
- Gloves. Sheet metal and broken glass are everywhere
- Closed-toe boots, not sneakers
- Safety glasses. Rust and fluid drip when you're under a car
- Water and a rag or shop towels
- Phone, charged. Take photos of how things connect before you unplug them
- A bag or bucket for small parts and bolts. Keep the bolts with the part
Leave at home
Jacks, jack stands, torches and grinders. Most yards ban them. Battery tools are often allowed but check the yard's rules first.

Many yards post their allowed and banned tools online. Check before you go so nothing gets turned away at the gate.
