Junkyard Safety & Etiquette: Don't Be That Guy
Safety
- Never get under a car that's off its stands or leaning. Cars are set on wheel stands. Don't climb on or rock them.
- Watch for broken glass, sharp edges, and leftover fluids (gas, coolant, oil). Don't smoke.
- Airbags can still be live. Don't pull or poke them unless you know how and the yard allows it.
- Go with a friend if you can, and tell someone where you are.
- Heat and sun: bring water. Yards have little shade.
Etiquette
- Take only the parts you're buying. Don't strip parts you don't need, or hide parts to come back later.
- Don't trash a whole car to get one part. Someone else may need the door, the seat, or the harness.
- Follow staff instructions and posted rules.
- Clean up your area. Leave bolts with the car if you're not taking the part.
Before you leave the house
- Check the yard's posted rules (age limits, tool rules, closing time).
- Wear clothes you don't mind ruining. Long sleeves help with sharp edges.
- Have a basic first-aid kit in your car.
If you get hurt, tell yard staff right away.
